The Environmental Problem Of Air Pollution - 897 Words
Air pollution has become a very costly environmental problem in terms of both human lives and in terms of billions of dollars lost for health-care expenditure and crop damage. In this essay, I shall identify the main air pollutants in my community, having contacted the local pollution control authorities. I will compare my own community with others and discuss my findings. Finally, I shall discuss two of my own skills or interests which could be applied, if I had the time and resources, to help improve the air quality in my community. In Wales, the control and regulation of air quality is the responsibility of the devolved Welsh Government, under the auspices of Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Their purpose is to ensure that the naturalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Combustion from road traffic 2. Secondary particles of sulphate and nitrate formed by chemical reactions in the atmosphere and transported to the UK from across Europe 3. Coarse particles such as sand and dust (e.g. from the Sahara) or from Southern European Wildfires and transported to the UK via the prevailing or storm winds (Ricardo-AEA, n.d.) Benzene and 1,3-Butadiene are Volatile organic compounds (VOC) which are minor constituents of petrol. The main sources of benzene in the atmosphere in the UK are the distribution and combustion of petrol. Of these, combustion by petrol vehicles is the single biggest source (70% of total emissions). (Ricardo-AEA, n.d.) Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless poisonous gas produced by incomplete, or inefficient, combustion of fuel. It is predominantly produced in the UK by road transport, in particular, petrol-engine vehicles. (Ricardo-AEA, n.d.) Ozone (O3) in the lower atmosphere is mainly formed by the sunlight-initiated oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx). As these reactions can take hours or days to take place, ozone levels recorded in the UK may well have been created by emissions from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. The highest concentrations tend to occur downwind of pollutant emission zones. (Ricardo-AEA, n.d.) The UK is currently required toShow MoreRelatedEnvironmental Problems: Air Pollution Essay2135 Words à |à 9 PagesIntroduction: Air pollution is among the critical challenges facing modern societies and is one of the most pressing environing mental problems.
